How To Make Tomato Curry Using Mustard

Tomato curry recipe is one of the simple recipes which can be easily prepared. Tomato curry can be prepared in different ways. We have used mustard for preparing this curry. Jaggery has been used to bring sweetness. This tomato curry can be eaten with chapati, rice, dosa, idli or anything you would like.

Ingredients

  • 5 medium size tomatoes
  • 1 medium size chopped onion slices
  • 3 tbsp black mustard ( 1 tbsp = 14-15 gm )
  • 5-6 garlic cloves
  • 1 Red Chili
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder ( 1 tsp = 4-5 gm )
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 2 tbsp jaggery
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil as required

    • Cut each tomato into 4 pieces.
    • Put 1tsp of oil in a wok or a pan & heat it. Add tomato pieces into it.
    • Now add 1tsp turmeric powder, salt and mix it. Cover it for 2 minutes on medium flame. ( Do not cook it much )
    • Meanwhile, in a blending jar add 3 tbsp black mustard, 4 garlic cloves, 1 red chili, and 1/3 cup water. Blend it and make a smooth Mustard paste.
    • Shift the tomatoes into a bowl. Again add 1tbsp oil in a pan.
    • Add 1tsp cumin seeds, fennel seeds, and red chili. Allow it to splutter.
    • After spluttering, add crushed garlic, chopped onion slices and saute it on medium flame.
    • Pour the smooth mustard paste into it and stir it for ½ minute.
    • Add cooked tomatoes and mix it well. Pour 1cup of water or as per your need.
    • Add salt as per taste and 2tbsp Jaggery. Mix it well on high flame.
    • Switch off the flame. ( Do not cook it for a long time, because the taste of mustard will become bitter )
    • Now serve the tomato mustard curry or tomato rai with hot rice or chapati.
